Backup Power for Small Business: UPS, Battery Power Station or Generator?

A power outage can interrupt internet access, payment systems, computers, network equipment and other critical operations. The right backup-power strategy depends on what must remain online, how much power those systems consume and how long the business needs to operate without utility power.

The short answer

There is no single backup-power technology that is best for every small business. A traditional UPS is usually the first choice when sensitive electronics need an immediate transition during an outage. A battery power station can provide substantially longer runtime and greater flexibility for suitable loads. A generator becomes more attractive when a business needs high output or must operate through extended outages.

Start with the equipment that actually needs power

Do not begin by shopping for a battery capacity or generator size. Begin with an inventory of the equipment the business cannot operate without.

Depending on the business, critical loads may include:

  • Point-of-sale equipment
  • Desktop computers and monitors

UPS: best when continuity happens in milliseconds

A dedicated uninterruptible power supply is designed to keep connected equipment powered when utility power fails. That makes UPS systems particularly important for workloads where even a brief interruption can reboot equipment, interrupt transactions or cause an uncontrolled shutdown.

For a small server, firewall, network switch, NAS or critical workstation, a conventional UPS may therefore remain appropriate even when the business also owns a larger battery system or generator.

Battery power stations: longer runtime without a fuel engine

Modern battery power stations combine battery storage, an inverter, AC outlets and charging electronics in one system. Larger models can run considerably more equipment than the small portable batteries commonly associated with travel or camping.

For businesses, the attraction is straightforward: stored energy can support selected equipment during an outage without operating a combustion engine. Some systems can also be expanded with additional batteries.

However, a product offering UPS or backup-power functionality should not automatically be treated as a replacement for every purpose-built UPS. Businesses should verify transfer time, output characteristics, load limits and equipment requirements before relying on a power station for sensitive or mission-critical systems.

Generator: still important for long outages

Battery systems are not automatically the right answer for every outage. When a business must support large loads for a long period, a properly selected generator can provide sustained power as long as an appropriate fuel supply remains available.

Generators introduce their own requirements, including safe placement, ventilation, fuel storage, maintenance, electrical connection and potentially professional installation. Businesses should never operate combustion generators in enclosed spaces.

How much backup capacity does a business need?

Two measurements are especially important: watts and watt-hours.

Watts describe how much power equipment requires at a given moment. Watt-hours describe stored energy and help estimate how long a battery can support a load.

As a simplified example, a continuous 200-watt load operating for four hours consumes approximately:

200 watts × 4 hours = 800 watt-hours.

That does not mean an 800Wh battery should automatically be expected to provide exactly four hours of runtime. Conversion losses, reserve capacity, battery-management behavior and changing equipment loads reduce the usefulness of a simple nameplate-capacity calculation.

Do not forget startup and surge loads

Some equipment briefly requires substantially more power when starting than during normal operation. Motors, compressors, pumps and refrigeration equipment are common examples.

A backup system therefore needs sufficient continuous output for the normal load and sufficient surge capability for equipment that has higher startup requirements.

A hybrid strategy may be better

Businesses do not necessarily have to choose only one technology. A layered approach can make more sense.

For example, network equipment and servers could remain connected to dedicated UPS systems while a larger battery power station supports selected office equipment during a longer outage. A generator could provide another layer for outages that exceed available battery capacity.
