Small Business Cybersecurity Checklist
A practical starting point for protecting accounts, devices and business data.

1. Protect identities
Use unique passwords, a reputable password manager and multifactor authentication wherever practical.
2. Keep devices controlled
Keep operating systems and applications current, use appropriate endpoint protection and remove access that is no longer required.
3. Back up critical data
Identify what the business cannot afford to lose. Make backups automatic, protect them from unauthorized access and periodically verify that recovery works.
4. Prepare for incidents
Document who should be contacted when an account is compromised, a device disappears or critical data becomes unavailable.
5. Train people
Employees should know how to recognize suspicious login prompts, phishing messages and unusual requests involving credentials or money.
