How Many Wi-Fi Access Points Does My Office Need?
Square footage is only a starting point. Walls, users, device density, neighboring networks and application needs matter just as much.
Do not size Wi-Fi by floor area alone
A 3,000-square-foot open office and a 3,000-square-foot medical office with masonry walls may require very different designs.
Count the constraints
- Walls and materials: concrete, brick, metal shelving and elevator cores weaken signals.
- Users and devices: twenty employees may represent fifty or more connected devices.
- Applications: voice, video and scanners are less tolerant of poor roaming or congestion.
- 5/6 GHz strategy: higher-frequency coverage often requires more deliberate AP placement.

For anything beyond a tiny office, treat an AP count as a planning estimate until you validate placement with a site survey or at least real-world testing.
