Business Laptop Buying Guide

How to choose business laptops based on job role, workload and support needs.

Buy for the job role

A salesperson, accountant, developer and video editor do not need the same laptop. Define workloads before comparing specifications.

What matters

  • Memory: enough capacity for normal multitasking without constant slowdowns.
  • Storage: fast solid-state storage sized for the employee's actual local-data needs.
  • Display and battery: especially important for employees who work away from a desk.
  • Ports and docks: verify monitor, USB-C, charging and Ethernet requirements.
  • Warranty: downtime can cost more than the price difference between consumer and business support.

Best-fit rule

For a small company, standardizing on two or three configurations by role can simplify purchasing, support and replacement.
